The month of July closed with a substantial balance in the number of cyber events compared to June, despite a significant increase in the number of incidents that particularly impacted the healthcare sector, along with central public administration and telecommunications. This is revealed by the third issue of the “Operational Summary, July 2024” report, produced by CSIRT Italia, of the National Cybersecurity Agency, which contains the key data and monthly indicators on the analysis and trend of the cyber threat, with a focus on the main industry sectors impacted and the most frequent types of threats including malware, DDoS and ransomware, in Italy and in Europe.
THE MAIN POINTS EMERGING FROM THE REPORT
- in July 2024 there was a substantial balance in the number of cyber events compared to June;
- the number of cyber events identified grew by 2%, rising from 168 in June to 171 in July 2024;
- the number of incidents increased due to a supply chain attack on an IT service provider, with effects on multiple entities belonging to the healthcare sector. For the same reason, the healthcare sector in July 2024 is among the most impacted;
- Italy is in 3rd place among the countries most affected by ransomware worldwide in July 2024 (in June it was 4th) and 1st place in the EU;
- the sectors with the highest number of events recorded in July 2024 were: Central Public Administration, Telecommunications and Healthcare;
- the number of new CVEs published increased by +26% compared to the previous month;
- there were 57 CSIRT Italia alerts on vulnerabilities to be remediated in software and IT solutions;
- Italy was not the subject of DDoS claims in July 2024.
