MAIL SERVER

A mail server is a computer system dedicated to managing electronic mail. Its primary function is to receive, send, store and sort email messages between senders and recipients. In practice, the mail server acts as an intermediary that enables communication via electronic mail between users belonging to the same organisation or to different domains.

When a user sends an email, the mail server takes charge of the message, routes it to the recipient’s server and ensures its correct delivery. In the same way, it manages the receipt of incoming emails and makes them available within the user’s mailbox.

Users do not interact directly with the mail server, but access it through email clients using personal login credentials that allow authentication and management of their own mailbox.

TYPES OF MAIL SERVER

The operation of electronic mail is based on several protocols that govern the sending and receiving of messages.

→ SMTP Server

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) servers are responsible for sending electronic mail messages. When a user sends an email, the SMTP server handles the transfer of the message from the sender’s server to the recipient’s server, routing it correctly across the network. When configuring a mail client, it is necessary to specify the outgoing SMTP server settings, which are provided by the mail provider or system administrator.

→ IMAP and POP3 Servers

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and POP3 (Post Office Protocol) servers, on the other hand, manage the receiving of electronic mail. These protocols allow the mail client to access messages stored on the server and download them to the user’s mailbox. IMAP keeps messages synchronised on the server, enabling access to the same mailbox from multiple devices. POP3 generally downloads messages to the user’s device, often removing them from the server in the process.
